Abstract

Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT) is a treatment approach for family conflict, physical coercion/abuse, and child behavior problems. This workshop provides an overview of the three phases in AF-CBT: Engagement, individual skills-building, and family applications. Within each phase, core child, caregiver, and family components designed to minimize the psychological sequelae of abuse (e.g., aggression, social withdrawal) and reduce the risk for recidivism (e.g., high parental expectations, anger) will be reviewed. Selected examples of a few recent clinical applications will high be discussed. This workshop will also address the role of parental engagement, integration of child and caregiver work, use of evaluation tools to document treatment course and outcome, and common implementation and systemic obstacles to effectively treating this population in alternative settings.

Evaluations of Criminal Responsibility

Wednesday, January 19 (8:30 A. M. – 4:30 P. M.)

Terry Kukor, Ph.D., ABPP

This workshop focuses on the practical application of a conceptual framework for assessing a defendant’s mental state at the time of the offense as it relates to issues of criminal responsibility – which is one of the most challenging forensic examinations. A comprehensive opinion about criminal responsibility requires the right data set, which is partly dependent upon asking the right questions. Different legal standards are reviewed and case vignettes are employed to help participants learn and apply a conceptual framework for conducting such evaluations.

Evidence for Forensic Psychologists

Saturday, January 22 (8:45 A.M. – 4:45 P.M.)

Timothy M. Tippins, J.D.

This workshop reviews the fundamental rules of evidence and related concepts that govern how forensic psychologists present their work and opinions via sworn testimony. Topics include the general rules governing expert testimony, the hearsay rule and related exceptions, the purpose and scope of direct and cross-examination, and effective strategies for communicating one’s expert opinions in legal proceedings.
